Cattle Colony

Found a cattle town on the frontier. Dig the wells, seed the grass, hold off the bandits, and survive the winter until the railroad names the county after you.

Cattle Colony

A Town That Exists Because You Dug a Well

There was nothing here before you. No water, no fence, no name on any map.

You start with a wagon, a few hands, and ground that has never been grazed.

Water Is the Whole Problem

Wells give up water at their own pace, and no faster. Every bucket is carried by someone who could be doing something else.

Build more troughs and the surplus turns foul before anyone drinks it. Foul water still feeds the crops. It also makes the herd sick.

You cannot store your way out of this.

Grass Is Something You Plant and Something You Lose

Send a hand out to seed a pasture. Wait for it to come in. Open the gate and the herd strips it to dirt.

Lock it too late and they eat it early. Move them too slow and it never grows back the same.

The herd walks outward. So does your fence line.

Every Name on the Roster Is a Person

They get thirsty. They get sick. They get cold at night in a desert. A bad bunkhouse and a long winter shows up in their mood, and mood is how towns empty out.

Give them a job, a bed, and a stove — or watch them wait for the train with their bags packed.

The Train Is the Calendar

It comes once a month. It buys your cattle and sells you fuel, lumber, and food.

Then autumn arrives, and it stops coming.

What you buy at that last arrival decides whether the town sees spring. Everyone learns this once.

Winter Freezes the Answer

Water stops spoiling and starts freezing. Heat a room to keep it liquid, or leave it outside and thaw it when you need it — and start the thaw before the cattle are thirsty, because ice does not hurry.

Fuel becomes the resource that matters. There is never quite enough.

One Building Changes the Rules

Running water does not sit still, so it does not spoil and it does not freeze.

The aqueduct costs a season of lumber and commits you to the route you chose. There is no second tier. There is no tech tree. There is just the aqueduct.

Hold the Territory, Take the County

Bandits come for the herd, not for you. Ride the line, or lose the cattle.

Grow big enough to defend what you built, and the railroad puts your town’s name on the county.
